Newton and Olson take the titles on a wild Marysville day

It was an amazing couple of days in northwest Washington, as R/CU visited west of the mountains for the first time of 2019. It was the fourth race of the 2019 Meyers Autotech Championship Series Powered by Rattlesnake RC, and all drivers were eager to gain some more points as we race for the title. The trip west brings increased horsepower and slightly cooler temperatures, but the weather smiled upon R/CU. Two straight days of sunny, calm skies meant it was all on the drivers to duke it out for the coveted President's Cup.
There were only three gas scale boats on-hand, and one had to withdraw during morning testing. The second gas boat had to withdraw after the first heat, therefore there were no more gas scale heats run.
Not to be deterred, there were still 1/8th scale nitro and 1/8th scale electric to run, as a full day of racing wound down to the finals on Sunday afternoon.

1/8th Scale Nitro Second Consolation
1st: 1994 Miss Budweiser (T-3), Paxton Reunanen
2nd: 1986 Miss Budweiser, Brandon Sano
3rd (DNF): 2010 Superior Racing, Jeff Griffin
4th (DNF): 1975 U-95, John Gatjens
5th (DNS): 2012 Matrix Auto Systems, Brian Anderson
6th (DNS): 1969 Notre Dame, Chip Dean
This was a great race for 3 laps, as Jeff Griffin was on the outside with the Superior and Paxton was on the inside with the Budweiser. The Superior seemed to be stretching its lead, when the boat slowed and would eventually die. Paxton was vaulted into the lead, and he won the heat to advance to the first consolation.
1/8th Scale Nitro First Consolation
1st: 1978 Miss Circus Circus, Mike Malloy
2nd: 2007 Boeing Dreamliner, Rich Matkin
3rd: 1972 Notre Dame, Doug Kirk
4th (DNF): 1994 Miss Budweiser (T-3), Paxton Reunanen
5th (DNF): 1987 Eliminator, Scott Meyers
6th (DNS): 2014 Spirit of Qatar, Adam Putich
Scott Meyers and the Eliminator took the lead on the frist trip down the backstretch, and started to stretch it slowly. However, Mike Malloy and the Circus Circus was consistently chasing and pushing Scott, with Paxton and the Budweiser not far behind. On the fourth lap, the Eliminator caught some air and inexplicably flipped into the left turn, which put Malloy into the lead. He avoided the flipped boat, and cruised around to take the victory and advance to the final.
1/8th Scale Nitro Final
1st: 1971 Country Boy, John Olson
2nd: 1979 Miss Circus Circus, Geoffry Grembowski
3rd (DNF): 1972 Notre Dame, Bill Brandt
4th (DNF): 1978 Miss Circus Circus, Mike Malloy
5th (DNF): 1978 Squire Shop (U-64), Dave Brandt
6th (DNF): 1974 Red Man, Paul Jackson
7th (DNF): 1970 Pride of Pay'n Pak
This was a wild heat that the judges needed assistance to determine the order of finish. The first boat to crash was the Pride of Pay'n Pak, which flipped in the left turn. Then, the Red Man spun in the right turn, which left it dead in lane 1. It spun right into the 79 Circus Circus, which clipped the boat and kicked the skid fin up. With no skid fin in the water, the pink Circus slowly trolled around on the outside, but was able to finish the heat. Meanwhile, it was John Olson and the Country Boy, who pushed out to an early lead, with the Squire Shop chasing. Then, the unthinkable happened: the Squire Shop lost radio control and cut across the course diagonally, slamming right into the Notre Dame, who was racing behind. This took out the next two boats. Then, on the final lap, the 78 Circus Circus hit something in the water, and was unable to finish. This meant that only two boats finished: the impressive Country Boy, who picked up his first victory of 2019, and the slow 79 Circus Circus.
1/8th Scale Electric First Consolation
1st: 2013 Oh Boy! Oberto, John Hogan
2nd (DNF): 1997 Close Call, Jason Colean
This was a two boat dual between the rookie Hogan, in his first race, and Colean, also a rookie. Unfortunately, the Close Call could not finish the race, and thus the Oberto advanced to the final.
1/8th Scale Electric Final
1/8th Scale Electric First Consolation
1st: 1993 Miss Budweiser (T-3), David Newton
2nd: 1999 Miss Madison, Henry Oord
3rd: 1983 KISW Miss Rock, Paxton Reunanen
4th: 1972 Notre Dame, Bill Brandt
5th: 1958 Wildroot Charlie, Ron Daum
6th: 2013 Oh Boy! Oberto, John Hogan
7th (DNS): 1984 Atlas Van Lines, Don Mock
This was an exciting final, luckily with minimal carnage. The Budweiser and the Rock raced down the backstretch in first and second, with the Budweiser jumping to an early lead. However, the Notre Dame came up from behind, and was starting to push Newton and the Bud when it cut a buoy. This vaulted Henry Oord into second, who moved up with the Rock spun. At the end, it was Newton, who took his second victory of 2019 with the Budweiser.
