Hull #8700

One of the more celebrated hulls in history, this boat started life as the Miller American in 1987. It transitioned under Fran Muncey's ownership to the Miss Circus Circus and Miller High Life, then was sold to Steve Woomer. Driven by Mark Tate, the boat captured Gold Cups as the Winston Eagle and Smokin' Joe's through the mid-90s. In 1997, the boat had a paint scheme change and owner change as it raced as the Close Call under Kim Gregory, and kept that scheme under a variety of sponsors for a couple of years. The boat continued through the 2000s and beyond as the York, Emcor, and Spirit of Detroit.

In 1997, Mark Tate drove the boat as it competed in all races. It collected seven 2nd place finishes before finally winning at the season-ending race in Honolulu. The team finished 2nd in national high points.
