The Miller American debuted in 1987 with what became known as the "Star Wars" canopy. Ran by Fran Muncey's team, the boat enjoyed a long career under ownership by Muncey, Steve Woomer, and Dave Bartush, where it last ran in 2013 as the Miss DiJulio.

In 1987, Chip Hanauer was the driver as the boat debuted at the opening race in Miami. However, the boat was only mildly successful in 1987, logging three straight second place finishes in Detroit, the Tri-Cities, and Seattle, before the team elected to run the hull #8401 boat for the remainder of the year. The team finished 2nd in national high points.
